Namaz-e-janaza ka tarika is short and done standing: four takbeers, with sana after the first, durood after the second, a dua for the deceased after the third, and salam after the fourth. There is no ruku and no sajdah. It is farz-e-kifayah: if some Muslims pray it, the duty is lifted from the rest.
The Prophet ﷺ prayed the funeral prayer for the Negus (an-Najashi) and said four takbeers (Sunan Ibn Majah 1538, sahih).
"I intend to pray the funeral prayer of this deceased, four takbeers, for Allah, praying for the deceased, following this imam." In Urdu: "Niyat karta hoon namaz-e-janaza ki, chaar takbeeron ke saath, sana Allah ke liye, durood Rasool ke liye, dua is mayyit ke liye, peeche is imam ke."
Say Allahu Akbar raising the hands to the ears (shoulders for women), fold them, and read the sana. In janaza many add wa jalla thana'uk after wa ta'ala jadduk.
Say Allahu Akbar without raising the hands and read durood-e-Ibrahimi:
Say Allahu Akbar and read the dua that fits (below).
Say Allahu Akbar, then turn the face right and left with As-salamu 'alaikum wa rahmatullah. Lower the hands after the fourth takbeer. The prayer is complete.
Allahummaghfir li hayyina wa mayyitina, wa shahidina wa gha'ibina, wa saghirina wa kabirina, wa dhakarina wa unthana. Allahumma man ahyaitahu minna fa ahyihi 'alal-Islam, wa man tawaffaitahu minna fa tawaffahu 'alal-iman.
Meaning: "O Allah, forgive our living and our dead, those present and those absent, our young and our old, our males and our females. O Allah, whoever of us You keep alive, keep him alive upon Islam, and whoever of us You take, take him upon faith."
Another dua from the Sunnah (Hisn al-Muslim):
Allahummaghfir lahu warhamhu, wa 'afihi wa'fu 'anhu, wa akrim nuzulahu, wa wassi' mudkhalahu... (for a woman: laha, warhamha, wa 'afiha...).
Allahummaj'alhu lana faratan wa salafan wa ajra. "O Allah, make him for us a forerunner, one who has gone before us, and a source of reward."
Allahummaj'alha lana faratan wa salafan wa ajra.
Follow the imam and, after the third takbeer, make any dua for the deceased's forgiveness, even Allahummaghfir lahu ("O Allah, forgive him").
Four. Hands are raised only with the first (Hanafi).
No. The whole prayer is done standing.
Wait for the imam's next takbeer, join with it, and after the imam's salam say the takbeers you missed (quickly, before the body is lifted), then give salam.
They may, in the same way, with the hands raised to the shoulders.
Learn the adult dua by heart: you will need it more often than you expect. Attending a janaza and the burial carries great reward, and reminds us of our own.
