Witr namaz ka tarika in the Hanafi school is 3 rakats prayed together with one salam, with dua-e-qunoot in the third rakat before ruku. Witr is the last prayer of the night, prayed after Isha, and in the Hanafi school it is wajib.

Quick answer: Pray 3 rakats like Maghrib (sit after 2, stand for the 3rd), but recite Fatiha and a surah in all three. In the 3rd rakat, after the surah, say Allahu Akbar raising the hands to the ears, fold them again, recite dua-e-qunoot, then go to ruku and finish normally.

What is witr?

Witr means "odd". It is prayed after Isha and before Fajr. The Prophet ﷺ prayed it every night, at home and when travelling, and said: "Make the last of your prayer at night witr" (Sunan Abu Dawud 1438, also in Bukhari and Muslim). In the Hanafi school it is wajib (just below farz) and is made up if missed; the other schools count it as a strongly emphasised sunnah.

When is witr prayed?

After the Isha farz and sunnah, until Fajr begins. If you wake for tahajjud, it is better to pray witr at the end of the night; otherwise pray it before sleeping.

Witr namaz step by step

  1. Niyat: "3 rakats witr wajib, for Allah."
  2. 1st rakat: takbeer, sana, Fatiha and a surah, ruku, two sajdahs.
  3. 2nd rakat: Fatiha and a surah, ruku, two sajdahs, then sit for tashahhud (without durood) and stand up.
  4. 3rd rakat: Fatiha and a surah. Then say Allahu Akbar while raising the hands to the ears, fold them again and recite dua-e-qunoot quietly.
  5. Ruku, two sajdahs, final tashahhud, durood, dua and salam.

The full method of each step is in namaz ka tarika step by step.

Dua-e-qunoot (Hanafi)

The qunoot recited in the Hanafi school, reported from Umar ibn al-Khattab:

Meaning: "O Allah, we seek Your help and Your forgiveness, we believe in You and rely on You, we praise You with all good, we thank You and are not ungrateful to You, and we leave and forsake whoever disobeys You. O Allah, You alone we worship, to You we pray and prostrate, to You we hasten and strive; we hope for Your mercy and fear Your punishment. Indeed, Your punishment will reach the disbelievers."

Urdu tarjuma: Aye Allah! Hum Tujh se madad chahte hain, Tujh se maafi mangte hain, Tujh par imaan laate hain aur Tujh par bharosa karte hain, Teri achhi tareef karte hain, Tera shukr karte hain aur nashukri nahi karte, aur jo Teri nafarmani kare usay chhorte hain. Aye Allah! Hum Teri hi ibadat karte hain, Tere hi liye namaz parhte aur sajda karte hain, Teri hi taraf daurte hain, Teri rehmat ke umeedwar hain aur Tere azaab se darte hain. Beshak Tera azaab kafiron ko pahunchne wala hai.

Another qunoot from the Sunnah

Al-Hasan ibn Ali said the Prophet ﷺ taught him words to say in witr (Sunan Abu Dawud 1425, sahih); it may also be recited:

Allahummah-dini fiman hadait, wa 'afini fiman 'afait, wa tawallani fiman tawallait, wa barik li fima a'tait, wa qini sharra ma qadait, fa innaka taqdi wa la yuqda 'alaik, innahu la yadhillu man walait, tabarakta Rabbana wa ta'alait.

If you don't know dua-e-qunoot yet

Until you memorise it, you may recite Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanah, wa fil-akhirati hasanah, wa qina 'adhaban-nar (Quran 2:201), or say Allahummaghfir li three times.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I read dua-e-qunoot from a book or phone?

No. Reading from a book or screen during the prayer breaks it in the Hanafi school. Until you memorise it, use the short alternatives above.

Witr kitni rakat hai?

In the Hanafi school, 3 rakats with one salam.

What if I forget dua-e-qunoot?

If you remember in ruku or later, do not go back; complete the prayer and do sajda sahw at the end (how). If you only remember after finishing without sajda sahw, Hanafi scholars say the witr should be prayed again.

Is witr wajib or sunnah?

Wajib in the Hanafi school, and made up as qaza if missed. The other schools consider it a strongly emphasised sunnah.

Can I pray witr after tahajjud?

Yes. If you are confident of waking, praying witr at the end of the night after tahajjud is better.

Conclusion

Learn dua-e-qunoot a line a day: in a week it will be yours for life. Witr closes your day's prayers; never leave it.
