How to Make Up Years of Missed Prayers: A Practical Plan

If you want to make up years of missed prayers, you are not alone, and it is far more achievable than the number suggests. Many Muslims return to salah in their twenties or thirties with a decade of prayers behind them. Here is a clear, step-by-step way to pay that debt back.

Quick answer: Estimate how many years you missed since puberty, then make up each missed fard prayer (plus witr in the Hanafi school). Pray them like normal prayers with the intention "the first Fajr (etc.) I owe". Praying one extra of each prayer daily clears one year in one year; two extra clears it in six months.

Do missed prayers need to be made up?

Yes, according to all four Sunni schools of law. A fard prayer missed without an excuse stays owed, alongside sincere repentance. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever forgets a prayer, let him pray it when he remembers it" (Sunan an-Nasa'i 613). Scholars reasoned that if a forgotten prayer must be made up, a deliberately missed one must be all the more.

Which prayers?

The five daily obligatory (fard) prayers. In the Hanafi school, witr is also made up. Voluntary (sunnah and nafl) prayers are not.

Step 1: Estimate how many you owe

Count the years from when you reached puberty (or age 15 at the latest) until you began praying regularly, then estimate what share you missed. The free qaza calculator does this for you.

Years missedFard prayers owedWith witr (Hanafi)
11,8252,190
59,12510,950
1018,25021,900

When unsure, round up: it is safer to pray a few extra than to leave some unpaid.

Step 2: Set the intention

You don't need dates. Intend "the first Dhuhr that I owe" (or "the last"), and the same for each prayer. Each one you pray moves the "first" forward.

Step 3: Pray them correctly

A missed prayer is prayed exactly like the original: Fajr 2 rakats, Dhuhr 4, Asr 4, Maghrib 3, Isha 4, Witr 3. See the rakat chart and how to pray step by step.

When

Any time except the three forbidden times: sunrise, zawal (solar noon) and sunset (Sahih Muslim 1929). Hanafis may pray missed fard prayers after Fajr and Asr. Check today's sunrise and zawal times for your city.

Step 4: Choose a pace you can keep

Extra per day1 year of qaza done in10 years done in
1 of each prayer12 months10 years
2 of each prayer6 months5 years
3 of each prayer4 months3 years 4 months

The habit that works best: after each daily prayer, pray one missed prayer of the same name. It adds only a few minutes per prayer.

Step 5: Track every one

Without a count you lose motivation and lose track. The free Yaad-e-Namaz tracker counts every missed prayer you complete, and with WhatsApp reminders you can just reply "2 qaza parh li".

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make up missed prayers instead of praying sunnah?

Keep the emphasised sunnahs (such as the two before Fajr). Many scholars advise using time you would spend on extra voluntary prayers for your missed prayers instead.

What if I die before finishing?

Allah sees your effort and sincerity. In the Hanafi school, a person who still owes prayers should leave a will for fidya to be paid from their estate. Keep going and keep a record.

Can women make up prayers missed during their period?

No. Prayers missed during menstruation or post-natal bleeding are excused and are not made up (unlike missed fasts).

Is there an easier way for so many prayers?

Some Hanafi scholars permit lighter recitation for people with a very large qaza (for example "Subhan Allah" three times instead of Fatiha in the last two rakats of four-rakat prayers). The number of rakats stays the same. Ask a scholar you trust.

Conclusion

Years of missed prayers are paid back one prayer at a time. Get your number from the calculator, choose your daily pace, and start with the very next salah.
