Namaz kitni rakat hoti hai? Every day a Muslim prays 17 rakats of farz. Around them come sunnah, witr and nafl prayers, and that is where the totals people quote (like "Isha ki 17 rakat") come from. This chart shows every part, so you know exactly what is required and what is extra.

Quick answer: Farz rakats: Fajr 2, Zuhr 4, Asr 4, Maghrib 3, Isha 4 (17 a day). With the sunnahs, witr and nafl that most Hanafis pray, the totals are: Fajr 4, Zuhr 12, Asr 8, Maghrib 7, Isha 17, and Jummah 14.

What each type means

Farz (fard)

Obligatory. Missing one is a sin and it must be made up as qaza. The daily farz are 17 rakats.

Wajib: witr

In the Hanafi school, witr (3 rakats) after Isha is wajib: close to farz, and made up if missed. Other schools count it as a strongly emphasised sunnah. See witr namaz ka tarika.

Sunnat-e-muakkadah

Sunnahs the Prophet ﷺ prayed regularly and rarely left. He said that whoever prays twelve rak'ahs in a day and night besides the farz, a house is built for him in Paradise (Sunan Abu Dawud 1250, sahih). They are: 2 before Fajr, 4 before and 2 after Zuhr, 2 after Maghrib, 2 after Isha, and the sunnahs of Jummah. Leaving them habitually is blameworthy.

Sunnat-e-ghair muakkadah and nafl

Recommended, with great reward, but not blameworthy to leave: the 4 before Asr and Isha, and the nafl after Zuhr, Maghrib and Isha.
