Qaza namaz ki niyat is the one part of qaza that confuses people: which day are you making up? The answer is simple, and so is the timing rule. Here is exactly how to make the niyat and when qaza can and can't be prayed.

Quick answer: Make the niyat for "the first (or last) Fajr/Dhuhr/... that I owe as qaza". You can pray qaza at any time except the three makrooh times: while the sun is rising, at zawal (midday) and while it is setting. In the Hanafi school it is allowed after Fajr and after Asr.

Qaza namaz ki niyat

Niyat means intention, and it is made in the heart. Saying it aloud is not required, though many people find it helps.

When you know which prayer you missed

Intend that exact prayer: "I intend to pray today's Fajr as qaza." In Urdu: "Niyat karta hoon aaj ki Fajr ki qaza namaz ki, Allah ke liye, rukh mera Qibla ki taraf, Allahu Akbar."

When you owe many (qaza-e-umri)

You can't name each date, so intend the oldest or the newest one you owe:

Keep using the same choice (always "first" or always "last"); each prayer you complete moves you to the next one. See qaza-e-umri namaz ka tarika for the full plan.

Qaza namaz kab parh sakte hain?

Any time of day or night, at home or in the masjid, except the three makrooh times below. The sooner the better: the Prophet ﷺ said, "Whoever forgets a prayer, let him pray it when he remembers it" (Sunan an-Nasa'i 613).

After Fajr and after Asr

In the Hanafi school, nafl prayers are disliked after Fajr and after Asr, but qaza of fard prayers may be prayed then, as long as the sun isn't rising or setting.

Makrooh auqat: when not to pray

'Uqbah bin 'Amir said there were three times at which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ forbade us to pray or bury our dead: when the sun begins to rise until it is fully up, when it is at its height at midday until it passes the meridian, and when it begins to set until it has set (Sahih Muslim 1929; also Sunan Abu Dawud 3192).

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I pray qaza namaz at night?

Yes. Night is a good time: after Isha and before Fajr there is no makrooh time.

Can I pray qaza before the sunnah of the current prayer?

Yes, if there is time. If you owe fewer than six prayers in all, you must pray them before the current fard (Hanafi tarteeb).

Do I have to say the niyat out loud?

No. The intention in your heart is enough; saying it is optional.

Can I pray today's missed Asr after Maghrib?

Yes. Pray it as soon as you remember, after the makrooh time of sunset has passed.
